The Realization of Grice’s Cooperative Principle in the Process of Introduction (A Case Study on a Chat Script of QQ International)

Abstract


This paper aims at investigating the most non-observed
frequent maxim in the process of introduction in QQ
international messenger. Qualitative method is used to analyze
the data gathered from the chat script of QQ International. The
participants are varied from some countries, however, mostly are
from China as QQ belongs to China. The data then were
analyzed using Grice’s Cooperative Principle which consists of
four maxims: maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of
relation, and maxim of manner. The result of the analysis
showing that the most frequent maxim that was not observed in
the process of introduction is maxim of quantity. The result of
this study is highly expected to contribute for the teacher while
teaching English, as a foreign language in particular. Therefore,
there would be no many obstacles when the students practice
their English in daily life, in chatting world particularly.
