Using Wireless Technology for Quick Distribution of Wireless and Mobile Course Notes and Other Resources

Michael Hosein

Abstract

Bluetooth is one of the most pervasive technologies
available on mobile phones. It is currently free and uses the
same spectrum as standard Wifi (802.11b and 802.11g).
Harnessing the use of this free technology might be attractive to
University and other students as messages can be exchanged
without cost (unlike SMS based systems). Key academic
materials like notices, basic course notes and even quizzes can
be distributed via Bluetooth. The paper looks at client server
applications that can be used by lecturers and students to
exchange basic course information. Lecturers benefit because
they can send useful information to students (which can be
staged). Students benefit by getting the materials without
attending class. They just have to be within the wireless range
coverage. The paper provides a base that can be used for further
study into educational Bluetooth applications.
