Sustainability of the Workforce Human Resource Influence

Abstract


One of Human Resources greatest contributions to businesses and organizations has been through gains in understanding and distributing information on sustainability of the workforce. Discussions about sustainability of the environment, sustainable business practices, sustainability of the market are common. Sustainability of the workforce means developing policies and practices that do not cause people to burn out in their jobs, that decrease stress related turnover, and decrease stress related disorders and diseases that carry large personal and organizational costs. Stress, even when its origins are outside the workplace, affects productivity and profitability. Employees who rank high in employee engagement rank low in job related stress, and thus have lower occurrence of stress related behaviors and disease. Sustainability of the workforce is critical to the long-term success of organizations.
