Farrah Jabeen

Abstract

This paper highlights diverse needs for teaching and learning
English in Bangladesh and how innovative methods are put
into practice to fulfill these needs and at the same time
creating a space for effective learning and Teaching. English
is highly emphasized in different stages of academia – Pre
University and tertiary. The main focus of this paper is on the
reasons for an existing gap of language proficiency between
the students of Pre University and tertiary level and how the
faculty of BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL)are constantly
striving to come out of the ‘vacuum’. The prevailing factors
that have an impact on students’ learning before coming to the
tertiary level as well as while staying in university are also
discussed here. A background research on this issue is done
here to point out different scholarly views regarding language
teaching and learning. The teaching methods, practiced in BIL
to provide language proficiency, are evaluated here to find out
how these methods are planned to introduce a new dimension
enhancing teaching and learning and eventually to have an
impact in the society.
