Abstract

The actual semantic content of
English prepositions has received peripheral
attention in the literature so they have not been
systematically investigated (Kemmerer, 2006).
With recent interest in what meanings are
embodied in English prepositions, it holds true
at the certain extent that English prepositions
do have meanings (O’Dowd, 1998, Tyler &
Evans, 2003, Lindstromberg, 2010). English
prepositions, based on recent interpretations,
encompass spatial and cognitive meanings.
Meanings of English prepositions, according to
Downing and Locke (2006), can be divided
into two categories, as shown below.
