TEACHING ORAL PRESENTATION SKILLS TO PETROLEUM ENGINEERING STUDENTS AT INDIAN SCHOOL OF MINES: A STUDY

Dr. Rajni Singh

Abstract

Effective oral presentation has become relatively
significant in every job sector today. With the world
turning into a global village everything is seen in the
market as a commodity from the point of its value
and packing and this appears true in the context of a
job applicant as well. The business world has
become more professional. The cut-throat
competition between the companies and the struggle
to survive and grow has brought more challenges for
a beginner. Today companies need very efficient,
competent, and highly dynamic personnel to run the
show and achieve the desired success. The
competency level is not confined only to the subject
knowledge; it has become essentially significant to
demonstrate one’s presentation skills in addition to
technical knowledge. Thus industry needs people
with effective communication and presentation skills.
In the context of petroleum engineers effective oral
presentation is a major requirement. Petroleum
engineers are expected/ supposed to carry out a lot of
research work in the field of drilling, reservoir and
new technologies related to these areas. Studies
witness quite a lot of uncertainties so reformations of
technologies take place quite now and then. And
when these new ideas come up it has to be shared
with the entire industry so as to be approved and
implemented by the entire petroleum community.
